In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, class, and campus involvement, it’s essential to find activities that offer a break from the daily grind. Hobbies are a fantastic way to unwind, express creativity, and find joy. If you are looking for a new hobby to try out, here are a few to check out.

Hiking

As the weather warms up, there’s no better time to explore the great outdoors. On campus, the Environmental Interpretive Center is open from dusk to dawn and offers beautiful bike and walking trails. Nature Walks for Mental Health held by the EIC on the first and third Tuesday of every month are a great way to unwind and escape stress. These walks are led by EIC Naturalist and Program Coordinator Alexis Kott and a Mental Health and Wellness Peer Educator. The Design Club hosts regular Art in Nature and Nature Photography events. You don’t need to be a skilled artist or master photographer, just bring your favorite medium and your cell phone camera.

Running

Running is a great way to get physically active and also offers mental clarity. Take advantage of outdoor spaces or consider heading to the Wellness Center in the fieldhouse for free access to cardio equipment.

Learn A Language

Learning a language opens up exciting possibilities for cultural exploration and connection. Whether it’s Spanish, French, Arabic, or any other language, learning a new language provides not only cognitive benefits but also opportunities to engage with diverse communities.

Learn How To Play an Instrument

Music is a universal language that speaks to the soul. Start with some simple sheet music and easy songs to gradually build your skills.

Crochet

If you’re seeking a tactile and creative outlet, crochet may be the perfect choice. With just yarn, a crochet hook, and some YouTube tutorials, you can create a variety of items, from cozy clothes to stylish blankets and beanies.

Art

From Leonardo da Vinci to Anselm Kiefer, creating visual art in any form, be it drawing, painting, or photography, can be a powerful means of de-stressing and self-expression.

Whether you find solace in nature, joy in learning something new, or creativity in art, there are so many hobbies to choose from. Take a step outside your routine, and explore an activity that you enjoy!
