This year was the 96th Annual Academy Awards ceremony, honoring movies released in 2023. The categories included Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Picture, Music (Original Sound), Makeup and Hairstyling, and more.
2023 had many movies that took over the media, such as the Oppenheimer and Barbie publicity. Social media users each expressed their opinions on which movie they thought was better. Now, we get the real answer at the Oscars.
The nominees for the Actor in a Leading Role category were Cillian Murphy, Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti, and Jeffrey Wright. While all the nominees were exceptional, the Oscar went to Cillian Murphy for his epic performance in Oppenheimer. This is Murphy’s first Oscar win, and first ever nomination.
For Best Supporting Actor, the nominees were Robert Downey Jr., Sterling K. Brown, Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling, and Mark Ruffalo. The Oppenheimer actor, Robert Downey Jr., won for his outstanding performance. This was his third nomination, and he finally took the award home after bouncing back from a difficult past.
Emma Stone won the Best Leading Actress award for her performance in Poor Things. This is her second Oscar win, her first being for her leading performance in the 2016 film La La Land. She accepted her award humbly, stating she remains in awe of the other female nominees: Annette Bening, Lily Gladstone, Sandra Huller, and Carey Mulligan.
Finally, Da'vine Joy Randolph won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in The Holdovers. The nominees Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, America Ferrera, and Jodie Foster applauded her.
Director Christopher Nolan won two Oscars after eight nominations for his hit film Oppenheimer and its Cinematography. Overall, Oppenheimer carried the Oscars with 7 wins, including wins for Editing, Music (Original Score), and Best Picture.
