Among the many activities that the student government is planning, Wednesday’s Safety Workshop was one of the most crucial of them.

Andrea McDaniel, UM-Dearborn’s Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Officer deputy director, took the mic at 11: 30 a.m. where she discussed tips and ways to ask for help in case of sexual assault. Followed was a heartfelt video discussing sympathy and empathy by Katy Davis. She talked extensively about the different confidential and non-confidential reports and resources on campus, such as the Counseling and Psychology Services (CAPS) office in room 2157 of the RUC.

This workshop also welcomed the presence of Police Officer Marty Morales, Police Sergeant Kaitlin Deslatte, and Project Manager for Violence Prevention and Response Initiatives Simone Dixon, where issues surrounding public safety on campus were brought forward.

The importance of creating safe and respectful spaces for everyone on campus was brought to people’s attention. There are several sources around campus that can help students throughout their time at UM-Dearborn.

Various emergency phones are available all around campus to help you in case of danger, whether it is at night or during the day. Keeping the campus police’s number at hand will offer you a sense of security and in any slightest doubt, ask for help. Add 313-593-5333 into your phone today for police assistance on campus.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is another resource for students to partake in for their mental health and wellbeing.

The student government strives for equality and safety of every student. This workshop was one of their many steps towards that.

You should never be afraid or ashamed to reach out for help. The police department, the student government and the different offices spread around campus are all here to give you a helping hand. You have a right to feel safe on this campus.
